I edited and mixed a number of songs on Elin Brimheim Heinesen’s 2023 album A Chasm of Precious Time. With contributors in the Faroe Islands, Canada, the Czech Republic and Colombia, the album is a true international collaboration. These lovely songs are all set to lyrics by Elin’s father, Jens Pauli Heinesen, who was a famous Faroese poet. My favourite “Sorgin er vøkur við” is featured here.

Materials for Aruna Antonella Handa’s song Have You Seen My Sister came in from musicians across North America. I was happy to contribute some editing to help make them sound like they were singing side-by-side. Aruna’s song draws attention to the need for evidence-based strategies to combat gender-based violence, and was nominated for a 2024 Canadian Folk Music Award!

Against the Grain Theatre is producing an excellent film featuring baritone Elliot Madore as he explores the question of his own identity. The music is composed by Dinuk Wijeratne. In his composition, Wijeratne fuses jazz, classical and other influences from music around the globe. I’m on board recording both the music and the dialogue for the film. Featured here is a preview of the upcoming project.

It was an absolute pleasure to work with Lamia Yared again, on her album Ottoman Splendours, which was released on Analekta. The arrangements are spectacular and the singing is powerful. Featured here is my favourite song o the bunch, Juego de Siempre.

The Zoophony was a collaboration between the TSO and the Toronto Zoo. In this fun educational film, the different sections of the orchestra play music inspired by the animals of the zoo. It’s not every day I get to record music next to a rhinoceros!

My colleague Brandon Wells and I captured Jean-Luc Therrien’s wonderful performances of several Poulenc pieces. Each sonata Jean-Luc played was performed alongside a different accompanist. This one, featuring Sarah Yunji Moon on flute, was my favourite!

During the COVID-19 pandemic the University of Toronto went virtual for their student opera production. This year’s opera was the very-zany “Escape Room” in which all the characters are stuck in an online purgatory. While the instruments were recorded in U of T’s Walter Hall, I had to record all of the singers remotely due to social distancing mandates. It was a challenge, but the end result is a lot of fun!

Another creation coming out of the COVID-era! Dreamed up by talented soprano Nofar Yacobi, this remote-rendition of Verdi’s Va Pensiero received nearly 500 audio and video submissions from musicians around the world. While editing was at times painstaking, the final result is truly heartwarming. The project was supported by cultural institutions around the globe and has been featured by Italy’s main television broadcaster, RAI.

Mixing

After working with Max on his previous project Sweet Tooth, I was happy to mix the first single with his new act Dream Soda. The tune is sparkly and summery and is definitely worth a listen.

This truly special album combining classical music from the Arabic, Persian and Turkish traditions is available online now. I travelled to Montreal to record and mix this album with some remarkable musical talents. Since its release, this project has gone on to receive critical acclaim.

Led by acclaimed violinist Shlomo Mintz and the Bravo Niagara music festival, and featuring performers from the world’s top orchestras, this virtual concert raised funds for the UNHCR’s COVID-19 relief efforts. I acted as a recording consultant for the musicians, and edited and mixed the Vivaldi and Kreisler pieces.

INCOMPLT is a video installation by French artist Étienne Chambaud, with music composed by the talented Kit Soden. I had the pleasure of mixing the film during my time at Galaxy Studios in Belgium. The installation premiered at the Cartier Fondation de l’art contemporary in Paris and has since been featured in museums worldwide.

Til Howl is a band composed of myself and some of my oldest friends. We released this live music video of our song “Carnival”, performed in the gorgeous Redpath Hall, accompanied by a string quartet.

“Chant en 14 temps” is an experimental audiovisual collaboration between video artist Alisi Telengut, singer Lamia Yared and percussionist Nathaniel Huard. The installation was shown as part of the Serendipity exhibition in collaboration with Montréal Arts Interculturels.

October Gold’s self-titled EP is out now. I had the pleasure of producing and engineering the album with Kit Soden and Aliza Thibodeau over a few months in Montreal (and Vermont, briefly!). The EP is filled with beautiful, lush arrangements and wonderful harmonies.
